Seeing as that tequila is my go to, favorite, best above the rest spirit and today is NATIONAL tequila day, I just HAD to share some recipes that I recently came up with.
I know most people think that tequila is either for shots or a marg, but no my friends it is so much more! Before we delve into the concoctions, I think I should fill you in on a few unknown and surprising benefits - yes, benefits - of tequila. Thanks to our friends at Elite Daily for these handy facts.
1. It helps lower blood sugar
How exactly is this possible? Well agavina, which is a sugar that comes from the agave plant used to produce tequila, triggers insulin production and therefore lowers blood sugar.
2. It aids in weight loss
Yes, you heard me correctly; there are certain components in tequila that can help you lose weight. In further tests done by the ACS, tequila helped overweight mice lose a significant amount of pounds.
3. It helps fight cholesterol
OK, let's get scientific for a moment. Increasing fiber in your diet helps in the reduction of cholesterol levels.
Like fiber, agavins lower triglycerides in the blood and levels of cholesterol as determined by researchers in Plant Foods For Human Nutrition.
4. Diabetics can indulge too
The high amount of sugar that is present in alcohol is what poses an issue for diabetics. The thing with tequila, however, is that it has significantly less sugar; therefore, it will have much less of an impact on blood sugar.

How many times do females worry about what to order on the first date? I only know this because I've had countless conversations with friends on whether or not it's appropriate to order anything but wine.
6. It won't make you feel as fat as vodka and beer
Raise your shot glass and cheers to this because tequila helps to regulate the absorption of fat in your intestines! And when it comes to alcohol, everyone knows how much drinkers detest bloating.
7. You don't really get hungover
You may quickly disagree, but we're not talking about that sh*tty watered-down tequila most people are accustomed to. Rather, we are discussing real 100 percent pure agave tequila. Try drinking this instead and see if that headache becomes a memory of the past.
How about them apples?!? Speaking of... Sounds like the new saying should be "A tequila a day keeps the doctor away!"
Now that you know how great tequila really is, let's get down to real business. Here are 3 wildly different, super simple, and "skinny" tequila drinks that you can easily make at home.
1. The Go-To
If I want to make a cocktail at home this is what I am going to make. Low cal, sugar, fat but still delish.
2 oz Tequila ------ Let me pause here.
YOU MUST ONLY DRINK 100% AGAVE TEQUILA - NO EXCEPTIONS!
1 oz lime juice
1/2-1 oz agave
Top with grapefruit La Croix
Mix everything in a glass or shake in a shaker. Pour over ice. Top with La Croix.
2. Blueberry Gingerita
I came up with this puppy by simply rummaging through my fridge looking for any fresh ingredients that would work with tequila. The hubs had recently brought home some blueberries from his families farm that were beyond good so had to think of a way to use them in a cocktail, of course. ;)
2 oz Tequila
1 oz lemon juice
1 tsp ginger
1/2 oz agave
Top with sparkling water
Directions: Muddle the blueberries, lemon, agave, and ginger then strain. Mix with tequila and pour over ice. Top with sparkling water.
3. Smokey Shishito Marg
I have been growing shishitos this summer and they grow like crazy, so I keep having to find new ways to use them! I love jalapeño margs and while shishitos don't have the heat that jalapeños do, they still bring that nice fresh, savory element.
2 oz tequila
1 oz lime juice
2-3 drops of Havana & Hide bitters from 18.21 Bitters (it's nice and smokey)
2-3 blistered shishitos
Muddle 2 shishitos with the lime juice. Mix with tequila and pour over ice. Add the bitters and garnish with another shishito.
